Republican Salt Lake County Councilwoman will bring real experience, leadership, and conservative principles to Utah
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
OCTOBER 23, 2019
SALT LAKE CITY – Today Republican Salt Lake County Councilwoman Aimee Winder Newton announced her candidacy to become the next Governor of the State of Utah. Winder Newton brings years of public service experience, leadership, and conservative principles to the race. Currently serving her second term on the Salt Lake County Council – where she was elected the first female chair in 2018 – Winder Newton’s unique experience and vision, place her in a strong position to become the next chief executive of one of the fastest growing states in the country.
Winder Newton released the following statement after announcing her candidacy:
“Utah is at a pivotal moment. Our tremendous economic growth puts us in a position of envy for the rest of the country. I’m a conservative Republican whose vision encompasses not just the next four years, but the next 40 years.
“Our state faces many challenges that can’t be kicked down the road to the next generation of Utahns. As governor, I will begin addressing issues like education, workforce, air quality, housing affordability, water and transportation, on day one.
“During my time as a member and chair of the Salt Lake County Council, I’ve realized how important it is to be able to work with people, while still maintaining your principles. On the council, I’ve worked shoulder to shoulder with members of both parties to oversee big issues. We’ve tackled the state’s second largest budget, reformed the criminal justice system, pushed to make government more open and transparent, and fought to break the cycle of intergenerational poverty.
“As governor, I will work hard to serve the people of Utah. I’m not running to be someone, I’m running to do something.“

ABOUT AIMEE WINDER NEWTON:
Aimee Winder Newton is ready to bring conservative leadership and real experience to deliver results to the Capitol. She currently serves on the Salt Lake County Council – where since 2014 she’s been fighting for innovative solutions to break the cycle of intergenerational poverty, to increase mental health resource coordination, and achieve full government transparency. She was elected by her peers to serve as chair of the council in 2018.
Her time on the council has also earned her the reputation of being a “budget hawk” – she won’t rubber stamp a budget. Instead, she digs deep, pores over numbers, talks with stakeholders, and then holds people accountable for every hard-earned taxpayer dollar as she oversees Utah’s second largest budget.
Aimee cares about her neighbors and Utah’s families. For over 25 years, she has shown up, pitched in, and improved communities. Aimee rolled up her sleeves to help Taylorsville become a city, and then served as a planning commissioner and school community council member – where she engaged first-hand in public education issues.
In addition to her work on the council, Aimee has been a small business owner since 2003. She values both a smart balance sheet and smart planning. She has also shouldered roles in communication and economic development – experiencing government from all angles in both the public and private sectors.
A graduate of the University of Utah, Aimee and her husband, Matt, have been married 26 years and have four children, ages 15-23.
